Castle of Sao Jorge
CASTLE OF SAO JORGE
The Castle of Sao Jorge (English: Castle of Saint George) is the main Castle of Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, and is located in the highest hill of the historic centre of the city.
Although the first fortifications on the Lisbon hilltop are known to date only from the 2nd century BC, archeological research has shown that human occupation exists there at least since the 6th century BC.
The fortifications of the castle were originally from Celtic and Iberian tribes (with probable Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian influences), afterwards Roman, Suevi, Visigothic and Moorish.
In the context of the Christian Reconquista the Castle and the city of Lisbon were retaken from the Moors by King Afonso I of Portugal with the help of European crusaders (of the Second Crusade), after the Siege of Lisbon, in 1147.
The castle has been built upon extensively in the centuries since then, and was the object of important rebuilt in the 20th century.
It has an area of around 6000 square metres with several towers, look-outs, a dry moat and two squares divided by an internal wall with a connecting door.
