Located in the heart of Kambala adjacent to the capital's central business district lies its biggest slums, Kisenyi. The residents of Kisenyi live in extremely close quarters, and less than half of them have access to water within their homes. The British-inspired colonial Lubiri Palace sits on top of Mengo Hill and has long served as the residence of the Buganda King. The sprawling grounds are most famously home to the underground prisons and torture chambers used by the dictator Idi Amin during the 1970s and later by President Obote for the same purpose. Located in the triangle between Luwum, Burton and South Streets, the park serves taxis and minibuses headed to in Eastern Kampala and Uganda. » Uganda National Mosque
The Uganda National Mosque, formerly called the Gaddafi National Mosque, is to the city of Kampala what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris and the Statue of Liberty to New York. Located in the old city on Kampala Hill, the giant 12-acre facility serves as the headquarters of Islam in Uganda. Construction of the mosque began in 2004, after the unfinished Old Kampala National Mosque from the 1970s was demolished.
